Still Here for Canada: National Public Service Week

This year, National Public Service Week (NPSW) will take place June 13 – 19. Despite the critical services our members delivered and continue to deliver to Canadians throughout the pandemic, this government continues to send mixed messages about the value of their work.

In one breath, public service workers are frontline heroes essential for the government’s pandemic investments. In the next, they are denying members their full compensation for Phoenix damages by actively blocking a fair tax ruling and continue to delay damages payments to retirees and former employees. This is on top of clawing back the use of 699 leave from Treasury Board members when many schools and childcare centres were still closed due to outbreaks.

If public service workers are essential frontline workers, then treat us as such. Do not make us fight for what we are owed for the Phoenix fiasco or struggle to access benefits guaranteed to us in our collective agreements. That is not valuing us. That is not respecting the work we do every day on behalf of Canadians.

At a recent meeting, the National Board of Directors decided that we will ask members to ignore the government’s lip service and boycott their NPSW events. Instead, we will encourage our members to focus on what really matters: building on the significant gains we made in the last round of bargaining and celebrating the value of their work.

This year’s NPSW happens to overlap with the very first bargaining sessions for this round of Treasury Board bargaining. We are encouraging members to take this unique opportunity and show their support for their bargaining teams, and by extension, the incredible contributions of public service workers.

Nationally, we will express our appreciation to members by running a series of digital, video and radio ads thanking federal public service workers for their hard work and commitment. We will also provide members with social media profile frames and video conference backgrounds so they can publicly show their support for their bargaining teams on social media and during meetings.

Regionally, I want to invite all public service workers to an online event, Still Here for Canada: National Public Service Week Edition. It is an opportunity celebrate the dedication of PSAC members as well as a chance to hear from the National President and meet the Prairies members on our national bargaining teams.

When: Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 7:00 PM MB // 6:00 PM SK and AB

Register in advance for this webinar.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. I hope to see you all there.

We do not always get the respect or recognition that we deserve from management. That is why it is so important to be there for each other as union members. PSAC is 215,000 members strong. Workers united together can accomplish far more together than we can individually.

Thank you for everything that you do,

Marianne Hladun
Regional Executive Vice-President
