Steve Sukhbir Reports

February 2020

I have been elected to the position in December 2019 and am currently the 1st Vice President of my Local Union of National Defence Employees, 30905 located in Edmonton. I have participated in the PRC conference call in January 2020 and attended the meetings for the Edmonton Area Council and the Edmonton Human Rights committee.

I am the chair of the Edmonton Human Rights Committee and plan to participate in the Edmonton Area council as time permits. I am also on the Steering Committee for the National Equity Conference in October 2020.

I was part of the steering committee for the Prairies Racially Visible Conference, held in Calgary from November 1 to November 4, 2019. And participated on the 3 workshops offered to participants. I was also on the resolutions committee and agreed to participate more in local committees and activities.

I have applied for the Joint Labour Facilitator’s Program in the hopes of training and educating our members (and management as well) if successful.  I have attended workshops and training sessions put on by the Edmonton Regional Office and keeping the members of my local informed and up to date on the current bargaining updates and encouraging them to support our bargaining teams.

March 2021

I Continue to participate in the PRC conference calls and facilitate online meetings for the Edmonton Human Rights committee. I have been re-elected as the Chair for the 2021 term. Not much is happening on the outside front due to Covid-19 while we all isolate and practice social distancing.

I am also part of the national LGBTQ2S + committee which had its conference in January. We focussed on resolutions, covid19 and pride, organ and blood donation, queer resilience, racialized queers, queer aging etc. We hope to gain feedback from our membership via a national survey.

We hope to encourage LGBTQ2S+members to share videos of experiences. We would like more updates from the MPs with regards to Conversion Therapy and the Blood Ban. We also would like to highlight that Medications and treatment is NOT covered by the Public Service Health Care Plan and hopefully it would be on the next round for the bargaining table.
