Sheilagh Hanson was elected as the Area Council Rep at a Winnipeg Area Council meeting on May 15, 2018. She has been involved with the union since 2006 and has been Shop Steward, Chief Shop Steward, Health and Safety Officer and is now Vice President of Local 50012, UHEW. She is also Chair of the Winnipeg Regional Women’s Committee and Vice-Chair of the Winnipeg Area Council.
Sheilagh believes in unions. Having worked at minimum wage jobs for most of her life, she deeply understands the vulnerability of the unrepresented. She has a deep empathy for the plight of the working poor, the dangers facing women every day, among other injustices within society. She sees the strength of unions as a tool that can be used to shine a light into these issues, and bring change.
“I want to be remembered as someone who used herself and anything she could touch to work for justice and freedom. I want to be remembered as one who tried.” Dorothy Height – Civil rights and feminist activist.
