REVP Letter: 2011 Transgender Day of Remembrance

November 20 marks the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, an opportunity to remember those who have been affected by, or lost their lives to, transphobia and transphobic bullying.

Dear Sisters & Brothers,

November 20 marks the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, an opportunity to remember those who have been affected by, or lost their lives to, transphobia and transphobic bullying.

At the same time, we have reason to celebrate. Earlier this fall, NDP MP Randall Garrison and Liberal MP Hedy Fry introduced identical bills in the House of Commons that would protect trans Canadians from discrimination.

Change is happening and better life for transgender peoples is possible.  Together, we need to ask MPs Garrison and Fry to give priority to these bills.  We need to help raise awareness and make our support known to our own MPs to ensure this important piece of legislation finally becomes law.

I encourage you to learn more about trans people and trans issues, and support the gender-diverse individuals in your workplace. Also, please take a few minutes to review the CLC resource titled Workers in Transition: A Practical Guide about Gender Transition for Union Representatives, below.

In Solidarity,
