‘I have been overpaid, underpaid, have had the federal government recover excess funds despite my official forms and paperwork disagreeing with their amounts, and have received no response to my letters, and cannot speak with anyone that can help directly.’ – Cierra – SK – Issues since 2016 – Current

‘It impacted me significantly.  I never received my holiday pay when I retired as they said I was overpaid, and I don’t know why and that was the start of it.  Sometimes I was told I was overpaid, and they held paycheques and I never got paid. They recovered the same overpayment more than once.  They told me I was overpaid when I wasn’t.  They paid me and then held it for an overpayment, to which I don’t understand.  After I retired, in 2016…I still have issues and haven’t worked since 2020.’ – Janet – AB – Issues since 2016

‘From August 2023 through December 2023, I received 35 paystubs – more than most people would receive in a year. Many of these contained tens of opaque entries and adjustments. An initial system problem was subject to a series of subsequent errors. I was underpaid, overpaid and even had no pay during this time.

I asked for a reconciliation and received an Excel spreadsheet with 1100 rows and 30 columns! I received tables of data in the form of pictures, which meant I couldn’t validate the calculations or even copy/paste the amounts. At the end, I had to give up. The best I could do was calculate the amount deposited into my bank over that period and use an average to determine if I received close to what I was expecting.’ Andrew – AB

‘I retired September 2019, and unfortunately my “Unit” (Dental Detachment CFB Edmonton) did not catch the appropriate paper work to stop my pay. I was over paid for approximately two months.’ – Pamela – AB

‘…Because of the Phoenix system there have been overpayments in almost every year. The paperwork for the leaves were inputed on time but Phoenix would still pay out and one time paid out overtime at the wrong rate. For example, had to go on sick leave without pay but Phoenix continued to pay. Employer was informed of the leave right away and put it in right away. I don’t have an issue paying back what I was not entitled to if they recouped it right away-in the year this happened or as soon as I returned to work. Recoup the $1500.00 or $2000.00 in overpayments in the year it happened. But this is not what is happening, year after year the overpayment is not collected and now it is over $20,000.00. I don’t know about you but it is hard to come up with that amount. Also at least two years going on three years ago I took leave with income averaging. The paperwork went in on time and compensation was notified a few times that they had not recouped the pay for the 5 weeks that I went off work. It still has not been resolved. Some of us will be retiring within 3-5 years. I doubt they will get going on collecting the debt until I leave. I have called compensation to say, when will you start actioning this so I don’t have a $20, 000 to $30, 000 dollar debt when I leave and have reduced income to live on. They sent me a portion of what I owed which I paid right away-about $2900.00. I have heard of many employees getting hit at retirement. The stress of this hanging over me is high and affects your health. It is easier to handle smaller debts and pay them over an accumulation of debt that will come just when your income is reduced.’ Joanne – MB – ongoing
