Statement
Truth and Reconciliation Day is an important day for people from all different backgrounds and walks of life to come together to show solidarity with our fellow Indigenous members, family, friends and peoples across our nation.
This is an important day to recognize the harms and injustices that were forced on our communities, and the lasting shameful effects we continue to see today from the residential school system, the day school system and the Indian hospitals. It is also a day to recognize that we can come together to advance reconciliation and work collectively to strengthen and unify our communities.
This is not a day to just have an “Indigenous person” to come speak at an event. This is a day for our survivors of the Indian Residential School system, which was forced upon our people, to speak and share their stories and experiences. And for them to be heard and listened to with compassion and empathy. It is a day to remind everyone that we must continue the fight to keep advancing reconciliation, confronting residential school denialism, and creating space and time for collectively healing.
This is a day for all to remember, that we, as Indigenous people matter. We deserve to have our voices heard. We deserve to be at the table where decisions are made, and take up space in our workplaces, our unions and in society. We are Indigenous, strong and resilient. We are not going anywhere.
We encourage all members to learn about local Indigenous cultures, build stronger ties within their communities and strengthen allyship. It is important to attend powwows, sweats and local circles or any event that are open for you to attend.
We encourage everyone to wear orange and show solidarity on September 30 and every day that you can. We notice and appreciate the show of support.
As we approach the fall equinox, a time of balance between day and night, and a time for reflection, gratitude and ceremony for many Indigenous cultures, we are reminded of the importance of balance within ourselves, our families and our communities.
The equinox is also a reminder to prepare for the coming winter months, to harvest medicines, and food, prepare winter clothing and shelter for our collective survival. As we approach a time of potential job action, we ask you to take time to reflect on how you can find balance during uncertain times. How can we work together to support one another and ensure our collective survival as union activists?
