“The labour movement has an important role in fighting the social and economic inequities that impact the lives of workers and people in Canada and around the world. The Social Justice Fund is one of PSAC’s contributions to that struggle. We will learn about the Emergence Resilience fund and what it is used for from BC flood relief, to anti-poverty initiatives, food insecurities in the North. Education in Action project is another initiative of the SJF.
The promotion of the right to decent work, quality public services, human rights and equality are cornerstones of the PSAC Social Justice Fund. Through education, mobilization and empowerment, PSAC’s Social Justice Fund works to advance the role of our members in building stronger communities, a better country and a more just and humane world.”

APRIL 9 – Bear Clan Patrol schedule engaged walk
“The Patrol came about as a result of the ongoing need to assume our traditional responsibility to provide security to our Aboriginal community. Given that the Aboriginal population in Winnipeg is anywhere from 60,000 to 80,000, and is heavily concentrated in certain inner city neighbourhoods, it was felt that the community must organize to keep the peace and to assist community members. The concept behind the patrol, then, is community people working with the community to provide personal security in the inner city in a non-threatening, non-violent and supportive way. The Patrol operates out of the Ndinawe Youth Drop In located in the city’s north end.”
The agency description
-is a volunteer driven community based safety patrol
-protects and empowers women, children, elderly and the vulnerable members of the community.
-also offers a daily food program to community members where coffee, water and food donations are offered to community members.

-Cleanup Earth Day – April 22 at 242 Lizzie St. Winnipeg
In 2018, the former Lizzie Park in Winnipeg’s Centennial neighbourhood was renamed in honour of prominent Indigenous activist Leslie Spillett.
Now called Giizhigooweyaabikwe Park, for Spillett’s traditional name — an Anishinaabemowin word that means “ribbons in the sky” or Painted Sky Woman
(and is pronounced GAY-zhee-GUHK-wab-EE-kway).
“I’m nobody special. I’m just an ordinary person, But I know that ordinary people do extraordinary things.”
Spillett is the founder and executive director of Ka Ni Kanichihk, which provides programs and services to Indigenous people in Winnipeg’s inner city.
She’s also been an advocate for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and started the Keeping the Fires Burning fundraiser, which supports efforts to preserve Indigenous traditional knowledge.
“It was beautiful, for me, to know that we could have a space where our children could come here and look at an Anishinaabe name and see themselves reflected in that name,” Spillett said.
“And maybe encourage them along the way to learn their language if they don’t know their language, and also to get their name if they don’t have a name.”

From the moment a child is born, she can grow up to be a scientist, author, business leader, mother, teacher or anything she may choose to be. Providing her with healthy options, education, and resources to make her own choices means removing some of the obstacles she faces. Depending on where she lives, a young girl’s challenges will vary and how we approach addressing those issues will change. During International Day of the Girl, join the global call to action. Create real solutions; listen to the aspiration of young women; mentor someone who will someday overcome the challenges she faces.
