National Day of Mourning, April 28, Canadians pays tribute to workers who have been killed, injured or made ill in the workplace and to renew our commitment to preventing further tragedies.
The purpose of Day of Mourning is twofold, to remember and to commit. To remember and honour those lives lost or injured in the workplace. And to commit, it is an opportunity to renew our commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace – to prevent further deaths, injuries and diseases from work.
As 155,000 federal public service workers continue to walk the picket lines today it should serve as a reminder that the health and safety protections and training we do today have borne from the strike actions of those who have come before us. Today as we walk the picket line, we remember and renew our commitment we will call to all members on the picket line, in their homes or in the workplace to mark this poignant day through a minute of silence.
