Cancelled: Convention Preparation: Getting Ready For Convention. (In-person Calgary)

April 18, 2026

9:00 am - 4:30 pm

Calgary PSAC Office

Facilitator: Lindsey Sparks

Attending convention is a vital step toward ensuring your voice—and the voices of the members you represent—are effectively heard on the floor.

Navigating the procedural “language” of a convention can be intimidating, but mastering it is the best way to influence union policy. During this course we will cover:

  • Rules of Order: These are the “traffic lights” of the convention. They dictate who speaks when, how to interrupt for a point of order, and how to move the business along fairly.
  • Concurrence vs. Non-Concurrence: This is often the most confusing part for new delegates and observers.
    • Concurrence: The committee recommends approving the resolution. A “Yes” vote supports the committee and the resolution.
    • Non-Concurrence: The committee recommends rejecting the resolution. A “Yes” vote here means you agree with the committee to not pass the resolution..
  • Resolution Strategy: Success often happens off the floor. Networking, joining caucuses, and preparing short, impactful “pro” or “con” speeches at the microphones are essential for building a majority. We will practice this during the course.

Convention Preparation is a good starter for new Delegates as well as those attending as Observers.  Though priority will be given to those attending Prairie Regional and Component Conventions this year, we also encourage members who have attended previous conventions as a delegate or observer with hands on experience to apply as well. No prerequisite is required.
