Albertans will soon be asked to consider important questions about the province’s future, including the possibility of Alberta separating from Canada.
As a Union representing members across three Prairie provinces, PSAC Prairies believes in a strong and united Canada. We also recognize that our members hold a wide range of political views and discussion surrounding Alberta’s future can generate strong opinions on all sides. We respect those differences and the right of our members to engage in these conversations.
Our primary responsibility remains the bread-and-butter issues that affect our members every day, such as, fair wages, safe workplaces, job security, benefits, pensions and strong public services. At the same time, a question as significant as separation has broader implications for our members, their families, their communities and the rights and protections they rely on.
For federal public service workers in particular, separation would create considerable uncertainty. Federal employment, pensions and benefits would not automatically continue under the same arrangements and could become subject to complex negotiations. There would also be significant questions about the future of federal jobs in Alberta and how federal programs and services currently relied upon by Albertans would be delivered.
These are not abstract questions for our union. They directly affect the jobs, livelihoods and economic certainty of the members we represent. For that reason, we believe it is appropriate to be clear about our position, we support Alberta remaining part of Canada.
We also recognize that some fellow Albertans have legitimate concerns and frustrations about Alberta’s place within Confederation. Those concerns deserve to be heard and discussed respectfully. We believe the best path forward is through constructive dialogue and solutions that address those concerns while maintaining a strong and united country.
