Day of Mourning 2026

On April 28, workers across Canada mark the National Day of Mourning. It is a sombre day but an important day to remember those who went to work and never came home or were injured on the job. We also recognize the lasting impact these tragedies have on, families, friends and coworkers, who are deeply impacted when workplace tragedy occurs.

In 2024, there were 1042 workplace fatalities in Canada, alongside 267,199 accepted lost-time claims due to work related injury or illness. These numbers from the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC) are not abstract, they reflect lives lost, impacted and the need to have even stronger workplace safety programs in Canada.

Ongoing changes to workplace expectations for our members continue to evolve and results in major impacts which requires staunch commitment to keep workers safe. The work of health and safety representatives and committees remain critical in protecting workers and preventing harm, in order to foster healthy workplaces.

The Day of Mourning is not only a day of remembrance, but also a time for action. Governments must be held accountable to strengthen, pass and enforce laws that protect all workers in Canada. It is through strong collective action from workers that creates meaningful change in health and safety legislation and the strict enforcement of existing laws.

Together, we must fight for healthy and safe workplaces.

We honour and remember those workers we have lost by fighting to prevent further tragedy.

PSAC Prairie Region Occupational Health and Safety Committee
