Edmonton Regional Women’s Committee “Women Helping Women”

Saturday, September 23, 2023

10:00 am - 4:00 pm

10090 93 Ave, Fort Saskatchewan, AB T8L 1N4

Regional Women’s Committees are an integral part in ensuring our members have a local hub for political and community action and making those critical alliances with marginalized groups in our communities.

What we’re doing

The Regional Women’s Committee is hosting an event “Women Helping Women” This will be our second time and hoping for more “shoppers”. The event will be held on September 23, 2023, from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, at 10090 93 Avenue, Fort Saskatchewan.

There will be a “store” for the women to select outfits and products (such as purses, shoes, and accessories) to get through the first few days/pay checks to get ahead. There will be no charge for these items. An advertisement has been sent to women organizations that assist women leaving domestic violence situations and / or any other women issues.

Why we’re doing it

Women leaving a crisis situation may have no work experience, been many years since working, lost all of their belongings, etc. There are shelters and resources in place to assist in immediate intervention to remove someone from a crisis, but the step to independent living is very intimidating. Especially if you have no idea where to start. Breaking it down to even something appropriate to wear to hand out resumes or attend an interview. One of the main reasons women go back to an unhealthy environment is due to not being able to or knowing how to live independently on their own.

What we are looking for

We are needing volunteers to help with the event – if you can sign up for any of the days listed below, please contact Kim Cardinal @ cardika@hotmail.com or by phone at 780-239-4091. If you have any specialized skills such as interviewing, resume writing, financial planning, etc. Please include that in your email. Please respond by September 20th, 2023.

September 22nd (Friday) between 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm – setting up the space and organizing the items.

September 23rd (Saturday) between 9:00 am – 5:00 pm – assisting the “shoppers” such as helping with finding their sizes, co-ordinating an outfit, keeping the snacks and refreshments topped up (welcomed to bring snacks J), answering questions, helping/assisting with the event in general. In addition, if you are specialized in resume writing, interview skills, financial planning that would help women in crisis please mention in your email if you could set up an information table at the event.

September 23rd (Saturday) between 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm (approximately) – helping clean up and moving items for transportation.

The Regional Women’s Committee is very excited to run this type of event for the second time and we are hopeful that it will be a success.

In Solidarity,

Kim Cardinal
