REVP Letter: Black History Month, 2012

Dear Sisters and Brothers:

In 1995, the Government of Canada officially declared February Black History Month throughout the country. Since then, throughout the month of February, we recognize the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians, and reflect on the issues and difficulties that continue to be faced today within the Black community.

The theme for 2012 is “Our Canadian Story: Making Community Engagement A Priority,”and highlights the need for adults to provide leadership, support and guidance, and be positive role models that our youth can emulate.

So, in the spirit of solidarity, I encourage you to make community engagement a priority by organizing or attending an event in your area, spreading awareness in your workplace, and reaffirming your commitment to combating racism in your workplace and community each and every day.

Together, we can build the kind of open, accepting, diverse community that we want for our families and ourselves. To learn more about Black History Month, visit the Black History Canada website.
