What is an Area Council?

The organization and operation of Area Councils are encouraged by the Alliance as a matter of policy, provided that not more than one Area Council is organized in any area that can be reasonably encompassed by one Area Council.

Area Council meetings are open to all members of the affiliated Locals or Branches of Components within the area of jurisdiction.    Area Councils are designed to serve as liaison for Locals of Components.

The role of Area Councils shall consist of such activities as:

  1. Community political action
  2. Social and recreational affairs within the communities in which the Area Council functions
  3. Promotion and coordination of Alliance campaigns assigned to them by the National Board of Directors or the Alliance Executive Committee
  4. Promotion of Federations of Labour and District Labour Councils
  5. Dissemination of information and workshop and seminar-type education in matters directly relating to the functions of Area Councils
