I am writing to express my concern about the erosion of federal public services. Chronic under-funding, privatization, and contracting out continue to undermine the ability of public employees to provide the level and quality of service we expect as Canadians. I am particularly alarmed by decisions taken by the current government such as the elimination of the court challenge program, closure of 12 out of 16 Status of Women offices, cancellation of 15 programs designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the sale of nine government buildings, and the recent announcement of the government’s intention to privatize federal research laboratories at a cost of $9.2 billion to taxpayers.

As a Canadian I believe that public services are the tools we have created for ourselves to build and maintain our collective vision of a fair, equitable, healthy and wealthy Canada. Public services are a public asset. They are a public good worth preserving. They belong to us as Canadians. I expect you, as my Member of Parliament, to speak out and vote for initiatives that keep services public and ensure adequate staffing levels. I want you to know that in the next federal election I will be voting for a candidate that shares my respect for federal public services.

BILL C 484: CALL TO ACTION

Last March, Bill C‑484, the Unborn Victims of Crime Act, passed second reading in the House of Commons. This bill seeks to amend the Criminal Code and to create a separate offence for causing the injury or death of an “unborn child” should a pregnant woman be the victim of a crime. Although defenders of this bill claim they want to better protect pregnant women against violence, what is really at stake here is the legal recognition of the fetus’ right to life and the possible re-criminalization of abortion.

Pay Equity: The Federal government MUST take action!

Despite the fact that the Pay Equity Task Force recommended the adoption of a stand-alone proactive pay equity law, the federal government has done nothing.

Parliament Hill workers need health and safety protection now

The PSAC is asking that all members send a letter to your Member of Parliament urging the government to proclaim Part III (Occupational Health and Safety) of the Parliamentary Employment Staff Relations Act.

Help eliminate pay zones

The 2006 PSAC Triennial Convention made the elimination of the pay zones a key collective bargaining priority for this round of bargaining. Fax your MP and help end the discriminatory treatment of workers who are paid regional rates of pay based on where they work and not for the work they perform.

PSHCP Pay Direct Drug Card Implementation Delayed

A drug card was promised as part of the 2006 negotiations, and work is well underway to provide this new service to plan members. Originally scheduled for implementation later this year, it is now expected that the card will be in place by mid-2009.
