Edmonton Area Council Meeting

Agenda - approved

Minutes from September 18, 2002 approved with correction of adding date.

Old Business

AFL Affiliations 
Barb Ward reported no word back from Nadine Kovacs on any action plan, but Jo Chelick reported she is currently on vacation. So will have to wait until she returns.

Joint Union Management Training
Oneil to check who was selected as the Prairie facilitator for the training that had been held in Ottawa during September.

United Way

Irene stated she is pleased the work the Labour rep Perri Garvin is doing in acknowledging unions for their participation when campaigning, and hopes other reps will do the same.

Globalization Workshop
EAC will approach the assistance of the RWC for a joint meeting todeliver a presentation of the workshop "The Wall".

Health Care Campaign
Ongoing - still need to keep lobbying to protect a public health care system.

Financial
Treasurer Maria Fitzpatrick has amended the proposed budget to just 2002.

Environment
Ongoing issues regarding the discipline of members who crossed the picket line during the strike last year.

Justice
Oneil to check on privatization regarding the firearms departments.

Service Canada
Still on going to determine who is the actual employer.

NEW BUSINESS

Bylaws
Last year the executive had amended the bylaws; notices were sent to all locals, that bylaws to be brought forward for the membership's approval. Since there was no annual meeting, the amendments were never dealt with, so will be presented at the next meeting to be voted on.

Resolutions
Complete set of drafted resolutions to be ready for next meeting. The deadline for submission to HQ is October 28, 2002 , so will have to be sent by deadline, but copies of submission at meeting. Not included due to timeline of mailout of minutes.

REPORTS

Financial 
Amended draft budget for 2002 approved. Monthly statement also presented by treasurer and approved by the membership.

Components
Congratulations to Irene Berube on her recent election of RVP for the Environment Component. 

AFL Committees

Environment
Jo reported that a lot of information had been provided at the September 23/02 meeting regarding Kyoto.  She will be sharing the info with RWC who will be gathering info for their next meeting.

Health & Safety
Barb reported that lobbying for public health care important. A report is being sent to all locals in Alberta .

Edmonton District Labour Counci


Other Reports/Round Table
Discussion revolved on sharing information on how to educate membership on the importance of participating in activities organized by the union.  In the event of a strike looming, how to educate all members of consequences of crossing a picket line; designates - how they can help those who are on the line.

Discussion on members who have problems with their appraisals - using the PSAC guidelines.
