Globalization-

post information re the G-6 and G-8 on PSAC and AFL
web sites.  AFL web site: www.telusplanet.net/public/afl

Jo reported that the Prairie Council had met in Calgary that
weekend, so participated in some of the rallies and activities pertaining to G-8.

Signing AuthoritY-

it was agreed that it would be beneficial to have a third person as signing authority in the absence of one of the parties since two signatures are required. Barb Ward has volunteered.

Finance Report-

$1796.99 is the current balance. Maria moved her financial report for 2001, and 2002 to August 15, 2002 be accepted as presented.

2nd by Jo Carried

Advertising-

an ad has been placed in the AFL Labour News for the September issue. It was suggested that maybe we check on the pricing of other newsletters such as the Edmonton Examiner or See Magazine. Then there would be exposure to the current non unionized public as opposed to just those who are already union minded.

Edmonton District Labour Council-

membership thru Area Council still pending.

AFL Affiliations-

Barb Ward to check with Nadine Kovacs and  Alex Cosovan who are the PSAC reps on the AFL Executive Council about contacting locals who are
currently not affiliated with the AFL.  Also Maria will draft letter by October meeting to be sent to all locals in Northern Alberta .

Speaker-

Ricardo Acuna who is the current Executive Director of the Parkland Institute spoke to the group to explain the background of the Institute and what it does.   It was founded in 1996 and is a public policy institute for research. They are affiliated with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. They will research labor and public issues in order for everyone to have the facts.  Their first initiative was the book written by Kevin Taft -  Shredding the Public Interest which was a best seller.

They have other books, such as:
Writing Off the Rural West and Contested Classrooms.

They have numerous research studies such as Giving Away                     the Alberta Advantage and Reclaiming Medicare.

Besides the research material, they also have a conference
every year. This year the theme is: Trading in
Violence/Building for Peace. There will be several keynote
speakers and the cost is approximately $120.00 for the 3                       day conference November 15 - 17, 2002 at the Tory Lecture
                    Theatres, U of A.

The Institute is funded thru donations and memberships.                       They will be having a fund raiser on Sunday September                            15,2002 entitled "Picnic in the Parkland " at the McFall                          Ranch on Hastings Lake.  Cost of the picnic lunch and                            outdoor concert is $50.00.

They are currently operating on a break even budget,                     but have accumulated debt while they were growing                            these past six years. The University is trying to collect                          this debt, so they are hoping to get some substantial                           donations in order to clear the debt, plus build a                             cushion for the future. There have been some larger                          organizations who have donated $5000.00 each.
They are hoping to raise $35000.00.

They are currently working on an analysis of the Kyoto
protocol, but are always looking for research ideas, and will
contract with labour organizations for studies.

CLC Prevent Cancer Booklets-

Booklets have arrived and Barb will leave some copies at the Regional
office library.

Training

Barb was unable to follow up as Judy Shannon has been on vacation. O'Neill did advise that there are a few pilot projects starting next week. He will follow up on what is happening.

Teleconference-

Barb checked with Telus on the cost. After 5 P.M. the cost is .20 cents/minute/line.  If long distance, then long distance charges apply on top of the 20 cents per minute.  If customer dialed, and the person calling in has a discount plan, then no long distance charge. If
operator calls members, then the cost is 30 cents per minute, per line. eg for 10 local members, the cost would be $120.00 per hour.   It would be too costly an endeavour for local conference calls, but if anyone out of town that was not within a reasonable driving distance, then maybe
something could be worked out that they either
participate on the speaker phone, or thru teleconferencing.

New Business

Parking Coverage-

It was discussed re the cost of parking in the office area in order to attend a meeting, so in future each attendee to receive $2.00 to cover their parking.  Maria to handle at each meeting.

United Way

The Kick Off Luncheon will be September 12, 2002 . Since all the members in attendance will be out of town, Oneil will  represent the EAC at the luncheon.

PSAC Resolutions-

Everyone to get their ideas for resolutions on paper to bring to the next meeting to work on drafting resolutions for the PSAC National Convention.

PSAC National Convention Delegates-

Maria nominated Barb Ward as the delegate - 2nd by Jo.

Barb nominated Jo Chelick as the alternate - 2nd by Martine.
Barb nominated Maria as the observer - 2nd by Jo.

All elected by acclamation.

Education-

New Fall Schedule for Northern Alberta is now available.

Alberta Labour Law Review-

All locals affiliated to the AFL were sent a kit with information pertaining to the MLA committee which has been set up to review the current labour laws.  Every entity is encouraged to send their input as it appears there may be a hidden agenda to impose "Right to Work".  AFL
has attached some of the issues to look at, but ask that if anyone has more info to be sure to include it with their submissions.

Clay Robinson-

Correspondence was received reminding members of services available.
